Work with nature and people
Working in wilderness schools and wilderness education
Working at a wilderness school means sharing much more than knowledge about plants, animals, or survival in nature. At its heart, the work is about helping people reconnect with their natural surroundings. This might happen while tracking animals together, making fire without matches, or helping a group of children recognise the warning calls of birds. Wilderness education thrives on direct experience, curiosity, and learning by doing. As a wilderness educator, you are less a traditional teacher and more a guide, a mentor, and sometimes a learner yourself.
The opportunities are as varied as wilderness schools themselves. You might accompany school groups on woodland days, help run holiday camps, create activities for families, or share your knowledge with adults through multi-day classes and training programmes. Knowledge of nature, practical skills, and teaching ability are as much a part of daily work as leading groups, organising activities, and taking responsibility for participants’ safety. The work often takes place in all kinds of weather, sometimes over several days with nights spent outdoors. Alongside memorable experiences, it also involves physical effort, preparation, equipment care, and organisational tasks.
There are also different professional routes into wilderness education. Many people begin with wilderness educator training, then gain experience as interns or co-mentors before gradually taking on groups of their own. Alongside permanent employment, there are many project-based and freelance opportunities, such as leading classes, accompanying school trips, or working on holiday programmes. The work is often seasonal and calls for flexibility. Depending on the role, relevant training is complemented by practical experience, educational skills, first-aid knowledge, and a responsible approach to people and nature.
What connects many people in this field is the wish to share a connection with nature while continuing to learn themselves. Even after years of experience, nature remains full of surprises. WildNet brings together schools and people with different areas of focus, approaches, and experiences. Our job board features opportunities in wilderness, nature, and outdoor adventure education, as well as related fields – from your first practical placement to independently leading classes. You may find the wilderness school or team with whom you want to take your next step.
